PTC Fan Heater Review
A portable heat source called the PTC fan heater uses compressed air to heat up a room quickly and easily. The air is blown through a ventilation system, usually located in the ceiling. Many models of the PTC fan heater use high pressure and high temperature gas like propane or natural gas. Some newer models also use compressed air from a blower at a lower pressure than conventional units. The highest available pressure is about 8 PSI.
There are many different kinds of heating systems using PTC technology. Forced air or convection heating. Fan or convection heating. High surface or radiant heating, which uses heated plates or tiles to transfer heat from a central location to specific locations on the floor.
In addition to using heating elements to warm a room, many PTC fan heaters use a thermostat to control the heat output. Two heaters may use a single thermostat to regulate output of the heat they generate. The dual thermostats provide greater accuracy than single thermostats. Some heaters have both a fan heater element and a thermostat.
One of the benefits of a PTC ceramic fan heater is that they can provide very high temperatures with very little or no airflow. This feature is referred to as frost protection. Frost protection makes the fan heater work to maintain a constant room temperature. The best way to achieve frost protection is to follow recommended safety guidelines. Make sure the room is well ventilated and that the temperature is monitored when it is in operation.
Another benefit of a PTC fan heater is that they can be used in areas where an electrical heating element is impractical. Some units have an integrated power supply. Other units require external power supply connections through a wiring system or cable assembly. A PTC ceramic heater has an integrated power supply that does not need external power supply connections. The power supply is also located so it is easy to reach and is usually located near the base of the unit.
If you are using a PTC fan heater with a PTC power supply, it is important that you purchase and install a correct power supply adaptor. The correct power supply adaptor is necessary because the power supply may convert AC power to a lower voltage needed for a heating element to function properly. If your power supply does not have a correct adaptor, you may experience inrush current, which occurs when too much current is generated and flows through the heating element and then through the power supply wiring. Inrush current can be very dangerous and could damage your home. For this reason, PTC power supplies are designed to have an inrush current limit of just one amp per square inch of fan blades.
