If there is pet odor and dust indoors, which filter component of this home air purifier is most effective?

Update:20 Jun 2025

This home air purifier is equipped with an H12 HEPA filter and a carbon filter, which have different purification effects for different types of pollutants. In a pet home environment, the air purifier needs to deal with both solid particles (such as dust, dander, hair) and gaseous pollutants (such as pet odor, ammonia, volatile organic compounds), so it is necessary to combine the functions of the two filters to achieve the best purification effect.

H12-level HEPA filters can filter more than 99.5% of 0.3 micron particles, including pet dander, hair, dust, pollen, mites, etc. Pets shed a lot of dander and hair in their daily activities. These tiny particles are easy to float in the air, causing allergies or respiratory discomfort. The HEPA filter physically intercepts these particles through a dense fiber structure, thereby significantly reducing the concentration of inhalable particles in the room. If the pet sheds a lot of hair at home, the HEPA filter can effectively reduce the suspended matter in the air and keep the air clean. However, the HEPA filter cannot remove odors, so it needs to be used with a carbon filter.

Pet odors mainly come from urine, body odor, feces, food residues, etc. These odors are usually composed of gaseous pollutants such as ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, and volatile organic compounds. The carbon filter uses activated carbon adsorption technology, and its porous structure can efficiently capture and lock odor molecules, thereby reducing odors in the air. Compared with HEPA filters, carbon filters are specifically targeted at gas pollution, so for pet families, it is a key component to eliminate odors. If the pet odor at home is heavy, it is recommended to check the carbon filter regularly to ensure that the adsorption capacity does not decrease due to saturation.

Since pet environments often have dust + odor at the same time, using HEPA or carbon filters alone cannot fully purify the air. Therefore, running HEPA + carbon filtration at the same time can achieve the best effect. In specific use, the operation mode can be adjusted according to the degree of pollution:

Daily maintenance → Normal mode (balance purification efficiency and noise).

Sudden increase in odor or dust (such as cleaning cat litter, pets playing) → MAX mode (fast purification).

At night or when a quiet environment is needed → Sleep mode (low noise operation, maintaining basic purification).

In addition, it is also important to maintain the filter regularly:

HEPA filter: Check monthly for blockage, and use a vacuum cleaner to clean the surface dust (not washable).

Carbon filter: Replace every 3-6 months, and replace in advance if the odor becomes worse.
